To ``run'' or ``open'' a file, hit Enter or double-click the SELECT mouse\
button (usually the left button) on the file. If the file is a program, it\
will be run. If the file is a document file -- a file associated with a\
specific program -- the program will be run with the document loaded. An\
ordinary file will be loaded in your default editor.
If the opened file is a directory, however, the behavior depends on which\
\={110\view format\=} you are in, and which shift-keys you are holding down:
Directory Browser:
\I\I\I\I\I\I\iDouble-click View the directory in the next column.
Ctrl+Double-click	Open up a new Directory Window to view the directory\
in icon format.
Shift+Double-click	Open up a new Directory Window to view the directory\
in list format.\U\U\U\U\U\U\u
Icon Format:
\I\I\I\I\I\I\iDouble-click If the directory is a sub-directory, view it in icon\
format in a new directory window. If it is a parent directory, close the\
current directory window.
Ctrl+Double-click	View the directory in the directory window.
Shift+Double-click	Open up a new Directory Window to view the directory\
in list format.\U\U\U\U\U\U\u
List Format:
\I\I\I\I\I\I\iDouble-click View the directory in the directory window.

in browse format.\U\U\U\U\U\U\u
\P2\Alt+Enter or Alt+Double-click will bring up a \={410\Properties dialog\=}\
for the current file, which provides a great deal of miscellaneous data\
for the file.
Clicking MENU within the \={110\window pane\=} brings up the \={900\File\
Manipulation Menu\=}, a menu which contains many of the more-frequently-used\
file operations.

\P1.5\\S1.5\\cSelecting Files With the Keyboard\f
In this topic, we shall concern ourselves with selecting and scrolling the\
files in the Directory Window. To find out what keystrokes to use for a\
given command, search for the command using the Search button above, or\
examine FM's menus -- all keyboard accelerators are listed in the menu after\
the commands themselves. Also see \={1100\Manipulating Files\=} for\
information on basic file manipulation with both keyboard and mouse.
\P2\The arrow keys (Up, Down, Left, and Right) move the current file selector.\
All other files are first deselected, and the new file is made current and\
selected. (In the Directory Browser, however, the Left and Right arrow\
keys change the current list, without affecting selected files.)
\P1.5\If the Control key is held down with the arrow keys (Ctrl+Up, etc.),\
the current file is changed, but without affecting other files that may\
already be selected. In addition, the new file is not automatically\
selected.
The PgUp and PgDn keys scroll the list up and down by one page at a time,\
without affecting any files that may already be selected.
Ctrl+PgUp and Ctrl+PgDn jump to the very top and the very bottom of the\
file list, respectively. Like the PgUp and PgDn keys, they do not affect\
any files that may already be selected.
The Space key selects the current file and deselects all other files.\
Ctrl+Space selects the current file if it is not selected, or deselects it\
if it is selected; no other files are affected.
If the Shift key is held down in combination with other direction keys\
(e.g. Shift+Up, Shift+Left, Shift+PgDn, Shift+Ctrl+PgUp, etc.), a range --\
a contiguous group -- of files is selected. First, all other files are\
deselected. Then, as you move the current file, all files from the current\
file to the original file are selected. As you are scrolling, you may pass\
over the original file; in that case, a group extending in the other\
direction is selected.

\!\n1120\\tSelecting Files With the Mouse\\kMouse\\kSelecting Files\
\P1.5\\S1.5\\cSelecting Files With the Mouse\f
In this topic, we shall concern ourselves with selecting the files in the\
Directory Window with the mouse. View the \={1200\Dragging and Dropping\
Files\=} topic for information on that subject. Also see\
\={1100\Manipulating Files\=} for information on basic file manipulation\
with both keyboard and mouse.
A simple mouse click with the SELECT button (usually the left button) on a\
file will select that file and deselect all other files. If you click\
Ctrl+SELECT with the mouse on a file, that file will be selected or\
deselected (inverting its previous state), while all other files will\
remain unchanged. Clicking ADJUST (usually the middle button) will do the\
same thing, ``adjusting'' the current group of selected files to include or\
exclude the clicked file.
If you click a file while holding down Shift, a group of files will be\
selected: first, all files will be deselected, then the group of files\
extending from the original file to the new file (and including both) will\
be selected.

\!\n1200\\tDragging and Dropping Files\\kManipulating Files\\kFile Manipulation\\kFile Operations\\kDrag and Drop\\kDrop, Drag and\\kMouse\
\P1.5\\S1.5\\cDragging and Dropping Files\f
InterDesk provides a facility to drag and drop files between directory\
windows, and even from a directory window to the application dock. Multiple\
files and directories can be dragged in one operation, and various different\
file operations can be performed through drag-and-drop. The InterDesk\
Graphical Shell provides the support needed for the various applications in\
the drag-and-drop process to communicate.
In the following descriptions, you are to use the SELECT mouse button\
(usually the left button).
To drag and drop a file or a group of files, click one of the selected files\
with the mouse and, without releasing the button, drag the files to their\
destination. (This works because if you click a selected file, all other\
files aren't deselected until you release the mouse button, unless you drag\
the files, in which case the other files won't be deselected at all.) When\
at the destination, ``drop'' the files by releasing the mouse button.
When you drop files in a directory window, the shift-keys that are held down\
determine what is done to those files. (Note that the shift-key must be\
held when you DROP the files.) The following shift-keys perform the\
following operations:
\I\i<None> The dropped files are MOVED to the destination.
Control The dropped files are COPIED to the destination.
Shift The dropped files are LINKED to the destination.\U\u
When you drag files, you must be careful where you drop them. If you drop\
them within a directory window, they will normally moved (or copied or\
linked) to that directory. However, if you drop files on top of a directory\
file, in a directory window, they are moved (or copied or linked) to the\
directory you dropped them on. This even works WITHIN a directory window\
-- you can drag files on top of a directory file in the same window to\
move/copy/link the files to that directory.

\!\n1000\\tNavigating the Directory Structure\\kNavigating the Directory Structure\\kDirectory Navigation\\kTraversing the Directory Structure\
\P1.5\\S1.5\\cNavigating the Directory Structure\f
There are several means of traversing the filesystem tree:
\I\iBy \sopening\s the directories you wish to view. You can open\
directories by double-clicking on them or hitting Enter. See \={1100\\
Manipulating Files in the Directory Window\=} for more information on this\
method.
By clicking the \={320\Parent Dir\=} button in FM's menu. This button\
takes you to the parent directory of the current directory.
By clicking the \={310\Path\=} button in FM's menu. This button lets you\
enter a specific path to view.
