NOTE: QUICS is the QNX Users Interactive Conference System. It's
sole reason for existing is to provide technical support and
product updates for QNX Software Systems Ltd customers and
prospective clients. We are not an internet service provider
and as such do not expect to be able to telnet, ftp or send
       email off-site.

---

As a new user to the QUICS system there are a few things that you
should be aware of. QUICS consists of three pieces:

1. The conferencing system.

This system is based on the tin newsreader, to access the conferencing
system type "tin" at the '$' prompt. Once inside tin for the first time
we recommend that you type 'h' to examine tin's help screens; they are
available at just about every prompt.

If you are connected over the internet and you are using the 'qnx' or
'qnx2' style terminal types, make sure that your telnet session is
8-bit clean if you want to use your arrow keys.

Please be aware that news is batch based. Therefore your posting will
not appear immediately after you post it -- at most it will take 15
minutes to appear.

NOTE: Your default .newsrc contains only a single newsgroup. To find out
about the other groups available to you, please use the 'y' command.
(You may want to <S>ubscribe to everything in "quics.*", and
then proceed to unsubscribe from groups that don't interest you.)

2. Update of purchased products.

You should use the "profile" command at the '$' prompt to tell us which
serial number are associated with you. After doing this you should find
directories under /updates that contain just that -- updates to your
purchased products. Depending on your access method, your method of
retrieving these files will differ. Internet users will probably want to
use ftp (ftp ftp.qnx.com), login as yourself, and you should have access
to your /updates directories. Modem users will most likely want to use
a conventional file transfer protocol such as qcp, or zmodem (rz/sz).

3. The Free Software Section.

Two directories, /usr/free and /usr/free2, contain unsupported software
that either QSSL or it's users have found to be useful. Please note that
the software found in /usr/free is "unsupported."

---

Please note that the shell that you are placed in is a restricted shell.
It is not the normal QNX shell.

If you have any questions, please direct them to the quics.info newsgroup,
or to the userid `quics' via email. Thank you.
