To run Houdini on unix, you must first set up the shell environment.
At a C shell prompt (csh or tcsh), type the following:

	source houdini_setup

or from a bash shell, type:

	source houdini_setup_bash

This command initializes the current shell's environment to run
Houdini. You may want to add the above line to your .login file.
Refer to the contents of the houdini_setup script for more details.

To run Houdini under Windows, the easiest choice is to select the
appropriate application from the Houdini Start Menu. You can also
choose to start the Command Line Tools from the Start Menu. At the
resulting command prompt you can run any Houdini applications as
described below.

For Windows users who are more familiar with a Unix shell environment,
you can start CShell (csh.exe) from the Command Line Tools prompt.
This application is included with the Houdini distribution. Because
the Command Line Tools set up the required Houdini environment
variables, you do not need to source the houdini_setup script. If you
launch CShell through some means other than the Command Line Tools,
you will still have to source houdini_setup as described above.
Houdini does not include many of the familiar Unix command line tools
such as awk, grep, and ls. A collection of freely downloadable tools
of this type can be found at www.cygwin.com.

If you are an Apprentice (non-commerical user), Houdini will guide
you through the process of installing a non-commercial license
when it cannot find a license.

To start Houdini Master, type "houdini".
To start Houdini Select, type "hselect".
To start Houdini Halo, type "hhalo".
To start Houdini Escape, type "hescape".

If you are a commercial user, please change your license server
host or redeem your licenses using the Houdini License Administrator
before running houdini.

To start the License Administrator, type "hkey".

Please send any installation problems to support@sidefx.com.
